The Ferals - Our feral cat community

At our farm, we are fortunate to be home to a vibrant community of feral cats. Some of these feline residents arrived through rescue organizations focused on placing barn cats, while others came from Toronto Animal Services. We also welcome strays from time to time, adding to our eclectic mix.

To ensure these cats are comfortable and secure, we have installed a kitty door in one of our spacious barns, where they've created a cozy sanctuary.

Inside, we’ve set up an inviting environment complete with plush kitty beds, scratching posts, litter boxes, and bowls filled with fresh food and water. There are also fun toys and climbing structures to keep them entertained.

These kitties truly enrich our farm life. They coexist harmoniously with our larger animals in the barnyard, enjoying the freedom to come and go as they please. Feral cats are invaluable members of our farm ecosystem, playing a crucial role in controlling the mouse population. However, it's important to note that they should always be provided with food. Contrary to a common misconception, not feeding them does not make them hunt for mice more effectively. In reality, their hunting instincts are often more about play than necessity, and we frequently find their little "gifts" left at the barn doors.

Our farm operates as a cohesive ecosystem where every creature has its role, contributing to the intricate balance that makes it thrive. The feral cats not only assist in pest control but also bring joy, humor, and companionship, enriching our daily lives on the farm.
