Dive Into Identity with Animal Mask Making

Grade Level:
Grades 1-2
Subject Area:
Visual Arts & Science

In our exciting class, students delved into the world of animals, merging art and science to gain a deeper understanding of living organisms.

We also pondered the importance of authenticity for personal growth and emotional well-being. We discussed the idea of wearing emotional masks and hiding our feelings, exploring when and why we might do this.

The students courageously opened up about their personal experiences, discovering that there are times when wearing a metaphorical mask can help them access the confidence or courage they need to navigate difficult situations. This realization highlighted the idea that, in certain circumstances, putting on a façade can serve as a protective mechanism, allowing individuals to step outside their comfort zones. However, they also came to understand that relying on a mask to conceal their true selves can be detrimental. While it may provide temporary relief or a sense of security, hiding behind a mask ultimately hinders personal growth and authentic connections with others. The students recognized the importance of embracing vulnerability and being genuine, as true strength lies in the ability to reveal one's authentic self, even in the face of challenges. By sharing their insights, they fostered a supportive environment that encouraged honesty and self-acceptance, emphasizing that authenticity is essential for meaningful relationships and personal fulfillment.

Through creating animal masks, the students also connected with animals that resonated with them. They expressed ideas like, “I’m like a fox because sometimes I can be vicious,” or “I’m like a dog because I am trusting and loyal.” This exercise ultimately helped them understand how they sometimes hide their emotions behind a “mask” as well.

Engaging in creative expression, students then designed and crafted their masks representing animals they felt a connection to, while reflecting on identity and authenticity simultaneously. Starting with a plan for their masks, students selected an animal, considered its connection to them, and then brought it to life using cardboard and a variety of recycled materials. The masks were finished with oil pastels, paint, glitter glue and an array of craft materials for decoration.

This lesson beautifully integrated art and science, fostering a deeper understanding of living organisms and encouraging self-reflection, awareness and acceptance. Other areas were discussed such as traits an animal needs to survive like camouflage, which is a way to “mask the self” to survive predators. It was an interesting and engaging parallel. Discussions about migration, adaptation and hibernation also surfaced along with ideas about whether the students’ animals were carnivores, omnivores or herbivores. Was their animal nocturnal for example? It was a wonderful opportunity to bridge science, creativity and emotional awareness integration.

Exploring identity through animal mask making is a powerful tool, allowing children to navigate the complexities of their identity in a supportive and non-judgmental environment, promoting emotional growth and self-discovery.
