Glass Artistry: A Cross-Curricular Exploration in Visual Arts and Science
Grade Level: Grades 1-6
Subject Area: Visual Arts
Learning Objectives:
Visual Arts: Students learned the technique of drawing on glass to create unique artworks, fostering creativity and fine motor skills.
Science: Students explored the properties of glass as a material and gain an understanding of transparency and reflection.
We’re excited to share a cross-curricular exploration in visual arts, and science - Glass Artistry!
We kicked off the lesson with a discussion about different art materials and their properties, introducing the concept of drawing on glass as a unique art form. We delved into the transparency and reflective properties of glass, linking the artistic technique to scientific concepts.
Experimentation in the process of drawing on glass using appropriate tools (posca pens), emphasizing the importance of careful handling of the glass surface was paramount.
We provided examples of different drawing techniques and styles for visually appealing artworks on glass. Students were provided with glass sheets ensuring appropriate safety measures. They then created their own artworks on the glass surface, exploring transparency, positive and negative space, reflection and the visual effects unique to this medium.
We discussed the properties of glass and how it differs from other art surfaces, fostering an understanding of material characteristics.
Students then created an abstract watercolour background painting. The image on the glass over top of the watercolour painting created a dynamic superimposed effect.
By integrating visual arts and science, this cross-curricular lesson plan provided a comprehensive and immersive learning experience for students in grades 1-6, fostering creativity, scientific understanding, vocabulary development and self-expression.
All art classes and workshops can be altered to meet any grade level or expectation.
